«Shifting Identities»

Daria de Beauvais (senior curator, Palais de Tokyo) in discussion with Jakob Lena Knebl (artist) on the occasion of her exhibition «Doppelganger!» at Palais de Tokyo, in a duo show with Ashley Hans Scheirl.

«Shifting Identities»

Jakob Lena Knebl’s work is inspired by art history and popular culture, exploring the co-constructions and transformations of identities - through fashion, design, music, scenography and architecture - creating «spaces of desire» in her words. The artist talks to Daria de Beauvais about her sources of inspiration and her obsessions; her multifaceted practice (installation, sculpture, photography, performance) both political and humorous; and her desire to hybridize and democratize the exhibition space.

Jakob Lena Knebl worked as a carer for elderly before studying Textual Sculpture with Heimo Zobernig and Fashion Design with Raf Simons. She also works as curator and is professor of Transmedia Arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. She has exhibited internationally, notably at mumok (Vienna, 2017) and the Musée d’art et d’histoire (Geneva, 2021). She works also in duo with Ashley Hans Scheirl. They have participated in the 15th Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art (2019) and the Kunsthaus Bregenz (2020). They represented Austria at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022) and have a duo show at the Palais de Tokyo in the fall 2023 - a project that will travel to the Deichtorhallen Hamburg / Falckenberg Collection in spring 2024. Jakob Lena Knebl is represented by galleries Loevenbruck (Paris) and Georg Kargl Fine Arts (Vienna).
