Aperto Italia

Italy fails to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, and the Biennale Arte di Venezia 2026 records the lowest number of Italian participants in over 120 years. What is happening? Let’s talk about it.
Conceived by Massimiliano Gioni, Artistic Director of Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, the one-day program of conversations Aperto Italia reactivates, already in its title, the legacy of Aperto, the historic Biennale section dedicated to emerging artists, while also paying tribute to Giancarlo Politi and his presentations of Italian art in the pages of Flash Art and at his museum in Trevi.
Across a full day of conversations, artists from different generations and practices — including Yuri Ancarani, Carlo Benvenuto, Guglielmo Castelli, Giulia Cenci, Sara Enrico, Elisa Giardina Papa, Marcello Maloberti, Margherita Manzelli, Margherita Morgantini, Adrian Paci, and Patrick Tuttofuoco — are invited not only to present their work, but to question the conditions of its possibility: what does it mean to be an artist in Italy today? Which institutional, economic, and critical frameworks support or hinder artistic production? And, above all, does it still make sense to speak of “Italian art” as a category?
Rather than offering definitive answers, Aperto Italia brings together positions, tensions, and contradictions, opening up a necessary space for discussion to rethink the context in which art takes shape today.
