Marcel Fleiss opened the Galerie des Quatre Mouvements in 1972, encouraged by his friend Man Ray, with an exhibition of forty of the artist’s rayograms.
At the Galerie des Quatre Mouvements, then, from 1981, at the Galerie 1900-2000, Marcel Fleiss organized more than 150 exhibitions devoted to major artists or rediscoveries, and published more than 100 catalogues, some considered as sources of rare and important primary documentation. Since 1991, his son David has developed among others the photographic department.
Currently, Marcel and David Fleiss together devote themselves primarily to Surrealism (paintings, drawings, and photographs), while continuing to champion the art of the 20th Century and the emerging art of the 21st Century.

Galerie 1900-2000 is pleased to present a solo show of drawings by Leonora Carrington in the first edition of Paris Internationale in Milan.

Born in 1917, Leonora Carrington was primarily a draughtswoman.

In 1934, she moved to Paris where, for the next year, she studied under the tutelage of Lucien Simon. With Simon, Leonora learned to draw realistically and, thereafter, whenever she explored the city, eager to learn, she took with her sketchbook and pencil and drew what was in front of her.

Although her intention was to draw what she saw, curiosity often revealed that she was more interested in what she witnessed. Leonora was fascinated by people’s internal reality, their attitudes, gestures, and facial features. Enrolled in art school, Leonora drew nudes, interiors and portraits, as didactic exercises. The portraits project a psychological immediacy rare for a 17 year old.

This selection of drawings produced between 1934 and 1935 presents the work of a young but already mature artist.
