Anna-Sophie Berger | Gerardo Rocha
For Paris Internationale, Lodos is proud to present works by Anna-Sophie Berger and Gerardo Rocha.
Anna-Sophie Berger (b. 1989, Vienna) was trained in fashion and, in her work as an artist, has explored issues of protection and care as they might relate to clothing, housing, public space and law. She creates work that connects individual perception and intimate use with questions of material reality as part of socio- economic circulation and consumption. At Paris Internationale, Berger presents three sculptural works. Goddess Leaning on Her Elbow, (2024) is constructed from thread and a box of Big Babol chewing gum, referencing Salvador Dali’s painting of the same name and its concerns with bodily disjunction and fragmentation. Fedora 1 and Fedora 2 (both 2013) are made from four different hats cut into pieces and reassembled in a harlequin style. Berger is interested in the sociological component of the object. For the artist, objects are not to be seen as discrete entities, but rather as part of human life. This perspective allows the artist to explore the formal and functional properties of objects in ephemeral environments.
Gerardo Rocha (b. 1992, Mexico City) is an interdisciplinary artist working in various media. For Rocha, exploring the contemporary visual landscape of the city opens new windows for understanding and critiquing the complexities of globalized modernity and the poetics of the spaces we inhabit. At Paris Internationale, Rocha presents a new series of ten drawings entitled Desaliento (Discouragement), 2024. The drawings consist of depictions of massive image consumption and the consequent fatigue that comes from the task of looking. The delicate graphite and colored pencil drawings, some with elements of collage, are an analysis of an exhausting cycle of superficiality and transience, where meaning is lost in sensory saturation.
