Cibrián

Cibrián is a contemporary art gallery, established in 2018, based in San Sebastián, Spain. Our exhibition program is shaped by our geographic context, and the entire economy of the gallery and its balance depends on our ability to rethink the modes of production and exhibition, creating a new audience and expectations. To do so, we invite emerging and established artists to work with local resources and knowledge. We hope that the resulting ecology opens up new critical resources to both the local communities and the artists.

Cibrián is pleased to present the works of American artist Susan Cianciolo (1969) and Chinese artist Siyi Li (1999).

The superposition of the works of these two artists opens a conversation on time as a connective tissue as opposed to time as speed. Or as Cianciolo’s daughter, Lilac, writes in the work Money Box Kit (2008-2015): “I go fast. I go slow. And sometimes slow and fast.”

Susan Cianciolo (b. 1969, USA) is a visual artist, designer and healer who lives and works in New York, NY, and whose work has made an important contribution to the intersecting histories of art and fashion of the last three decades. Cianciolo works with collages, garments, textiles, installations, publications and performances. In 1995 she founded RUN, a fashion label with multiple iterations such as RUN Store, RUN Café and RUN Restaurant, with which she produced eleven collections between 1995 and 2001.

Kits

For this edition of Paris Internationale we would like to draw the attention on Cianciolo’s “kits”. These works play an important role in her practice since they display personal objects and archival material, condensing decades of the artist’s interests and passions within the space of a small box. These precarious time capsules are closed. However, it is possible to see their inside asking an attendant to open them. After a closer look, the viewer might grasp the delicate force within the work. It is not so much a confession or intrusion into the artist’s life, as it is a distillation left in plain view, a kind of gift to the viewer.

Siyi Li

Siyi Li, (b. 1999, China) is a multidisciplinary artist who currently lives and works in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He is mainly working with drawing, sculpture, painting, fashion, music and film.

Paintings

For Paris Internationale, Li will show a new series of works that will prefigure his first solo exhibition at the gallery, which will take place in December 2023. This series consists of handheld device-size figurative paintings depicting scenes from the artist’s environment and intimacy. Siyi Li, through a great variety of medium, tends to confront laborious work methodologies. The tedious work, here the painting, allows the artist to crystallize his attention to fleeting emotions as antidotes to the accelerating metamorphoses of our lives.
