«I wanted to break down the stereotypes of beauty used by the medias at the time »
Gretta Sarfaty
Our booth creates a dialogue between two artists from different backgrounds whose works focus on
the question of the individual and their relationship to society, through practices essentially based
on self-portraiture. They address questions of identity and representation already raised by second
wave feminist artists in the late 1960s and 1970s, of whom Gretta Sarfaty is a strong example.
Both artists question the mediums of painting and photography in a hybrid, multi-media formulation
that plays with with satire, art history and pop culture references.

Chris Kauffmann’s (b. 1999 in Geneva, lives in Paris) works are made by multi-layered painted
backgrounds stacked with printed images, extra canvas and other objects. He creates them using
coding or rules-based compositions inspired by board games and video games. Through these
distinctive assemblages that blend masterly the analog and the digital, he presents self-portraits
challenging both the vulnerability and the strength of human personas.

Gretta Sarfaty (b. 1947)
Gretta Sarfaty (b. 1947 in Athenes, lives in São Paulo) is an important Brazilian artist who’s had a new
recognition for the last two years.
Since the early 1970s, Gretta Sarfaty has been questioning and undermining stereotypical representations
of women.
Her work is born from an investigative practice of photographic self-portraiture and performance that
critiques the technological reproduction of the female image.
We are presenting a group of historical paintings and photographs from one of the artist’s most important
series - A Woman’s Diary (1976-1977). While in the Transformations series (1974-1977) she focuses
on distorting her facial features, here she lets her body form almost abstract signs, organized in
sequence. Sarfaty deconstructed her body parts, transforming and editing them by transfer and repetition.
