Callirrhoë

Callirrhoë serves as a gallery for contemporary art, blending elements of an art association to foster connections between art and society. It provides a platform for artists, thinkers, and all those engaged in current discourses, addressing questions that arise in our rapidly changing era. Exhibitions are curated around these themes, aiming to deepen our understanding of art’s impact on society and its role in shaping collective consciousness and memory. The space not only showcases group exhibitions focused on these issues but also features solo exhibitions by emerging Greek contemporary artists, with the broader ambition to promote Greek art internationally through collaborations abroad. The name “Callirrhoë”, derived from Greek roots meaning “beautiful flow”, reflects the natural outpouring of artistic expression and ideas that the space seeks to cultivate. The space was founded in November 2020 and is run by Olympia Tzortzi.

Callirrhoë is happy to present a solo presentation by the artist Vasilis Papageorgiou. Papageorgiou investigates through his new series of bronze sculptures Scarps the geology of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea by molding a series of lithified sedimentary rocks. The artist considers this act the first step in a broader project that explores how the built environment, shapes and transforms the natural landscape. As a result of the real estate overdevelopment on islands, alluvial deposits like bricks and concrete merge with natural limestones. Together they are forming a new landscape, reshaped by the sun, the sea, the salt and the wind. Papageorgiou produced at Koufonisi island a series of molds as an act of preservation. The molds function as negative spaces, forms to be filled, reconsidered in terms of materiality and understood as tools for reimagining history. Through this process, materials begin to unify, losing their sense of extrinsicness.
