For Paris Internationale, Tom Bull presents new works combining crafted forms with found materials. Their construction speaks to labour and control, while associations with intoxication, heat and fire introduce ideas of escape and subversion. Nitrous oxide canisters and aerosols incorporated into the works, misused recreationally to get high, suggest a desire to lose oneself, while bitumen gives the works weight and density.
Bull scavenges both his immediate surroundings and the internet, drawing from discarded materials, found imagery, subcultures and marginal visual languages that are reworked and absorbed into the work. Rather than simply representing lived experience, his works give form to its tensions and anxieties without seeking to resolve them.
