Vijay Masharani and Emma Masut
For the 2026 edition of Paris Internationale, Clima presents a dialogue between a video work and drawings by Vijay Masharani (b. 1995, Bay Area) and a new series of paintings by Emma Masut (b. 2001, Palmanova).
In his practice, Masharani investigates the relationship between minor gestures and complex systems, questioning which forces are at play and what may elude perception when attention is focused solely on individual details or, conversely, on the whole.
His video works emerges as a montage of recorded, hand-drawn, and digitally rendered materials that the artist continuously collects. By emphasizing post-production as a crucial phase of intervention, Masharani treats each fragment as a mutable element, open to recombination in ever-changing configurations. Similarly, in his drawings, successive variations of an initial motif appear transformed. Evoking the frames of a hand-drawn animation, these compositions oscillate between deliberate marks and seemingly absent-minded strokes, resisting fixed figurative intention.
Masut’s paintings similarly operate within a condition of uncertainty, although through a different relationship to image and narrative. Her scenes often appear caught in a suspended moment, in which the represented action cannot be clearly situated before or after the beginning, development, or conclusion of an event. Rather than describing a precise sequence, the paintings isolate gestures, figures, and situations whose narrative context remains deliberately unresolved. This temporal ambiguity shifts the tension of the image away from the depiction of an event itself and towards a cognitive and psychological state. Familiar actions and situations therefore acquire an unstable quality, hovering between recognition and uncertainty. Through this suspension, Masut explores how expectation, memory, and perception shape the way an image is read, allowing tension to emerge from what remains unseen or undefined as much as from what is represented
Placed in dialogue, Masharani’s and Masut’s works share an interest in the instability of perception and in the gap between an image, an action, and the systems through which they are interpreted. While Masharani approaches this through processes of accumulation, montage, and transformation, Masut works through narrative suspension and psychological ambiguity, allowing both practices to question how meaning is constructed from partial and shifting information.

Emma Masut
Emma Masut (b. Palmova, 2001) lives and works in Bologna, IT. She owns a degree in Visual Art at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna. In 2025 Masut was awarded the Collezione Falconi Leidi Prize promoted by Fondazione Zucchelli.
Her research moves between the practices of drawing and painting, which in her work take shape as spaces for archiving and developing small obsessions, mysteries, premonitions, and crimes. Her scenes often appear caught in a suspended moment, in which the represented action cannot be clearly situated before or after the beginning, development, or conclusion of an event. Rather than describing a precise sequence, the paintings isolate gestures, figures, and situations whose narrative context remains deliberately unresolved.
Recent solo exhibitions: Duel, Clima, Milan (2026); To Catch a Fly, Ann Mazzotti Gallery, Basel (2025). Recent group exhibitions: Cremona Contemporanea, curated by Rossella Farinotti and organized by Not Titled Yet, Cremona (2026); Il Giardino delle risonanze, Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna, Bologna; Hide and Seek, Gelateria sogni di ghiaccio, Bologna (2025); Per un’idea del colore, curated by Luca Caccioni, Luca Campestri e Olivia Teglia, Casa Saraceni, Bologna; Interferenze, curated by Simona Maria Pagano,Sof:art, Bologna (2024).
