SOPHIE TAPPEINER presents works by Jasmine Gregory and Angelika Loderer.

Familiar images and objects are rarely as stable as they first appear. Gregory looks at the aspirations and expectations embedded in advertising, fashion and language, while Loderer sets processes of growth, gravity and material transformation in motion.

Gregory examines how value, status and legitimacy are produced in contemporary society. ‘DO NOT TOUCH!!!’ and ‘EXCUSE ME?!’ are part of her new painting series “Vital Commands”, where she turns ambiguous expressions and instructions into the work itself. Distorting the typography in glossy paint, the letters elongate into slick stripes, flirting with abstraction while holding on to the authority of the command.
In the collage “All American Girl”, she disrupts fashion imagery through layers of palette sheets, paint, and tape, unsettling the polished construction of status in advertisement images.

Loderer gives gravity, chance and material behaviour a role in the making of her work. In the “Exposure” series, photographs of extinct or endangered species and fleeting human encounters are enclosed with mushroom mycelium. As it grows, it alters the photographs, pushing them towards abstraction. The same process overtakes telephone books, once essential tools of connection and now largely obsolete. In “Phantoms”, repeated layers of wax register bodily movement and gravity before being cast in aluminium, preserving traces of the process in the final form.

The work of Jasmine Gregory (*1987 in Washington, D.C., lives and works in Zurich) examines the systems that define value and legitimacy. Working in painting and installation, she uses language, abstraction, and unconventional display strategies to interrogate the social and aesthetic contracts that shape wealth, property, and taste. Making these conventions visible, she tests their limits and asks what happens when their underlying structures are challenged.

Angelika Loderer (*1984 in Feldbach, lives and works in Vienna) works primarily with sculpture and installation, using experimental casting processes and organic matter to question established ideas of sculptural form through the tension between perishability and durability. Her work emerges through physical processes that are partly experimental and beyond her control.
Loderer studied at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna (AT), at Wimbledon College of Art, London (UK) as well as at Hendrix College, Arkansas (USA).
