Entrée

Entrée is an independent, non-profit gallery in Bergen (est. 2009), devoted to the commissioning and production of new work by local and international artists. The gallery, run by its curator Randi Grov Berger, is located in Markeveien 4b, a 1920s building by architect Ole Landmark. The white cube has a particularly high ceiling and an enormous window confronting the public right in the heart of the city of Bergen; Torgallmenningen.

Entrée is proud to present Cato Løland’s most recent body of work, Chests, at the 8th edition of Paris Internationale. For this series of sculptures Løland has sought to locate similar forms in nature and within the body itself. The resulting sculptures reference ribcages and avian nests. Twisted wires and bent curtain rods create a rigid armature on which the artist has woven scraps of plastic, netting, delicate fabrics, plaster-wrapped bands, and organic materials such as seaweeds, grasses, flower petals, and branches. The forms are largely spherical and self-contained, they interact by latching on to the existing architecture much as nests cling to the branches of trees and sheer faces of cliffs.

Cato Løland (b. 1982, Kvinnherad) lives in Bergen, Norway. His work has a playful odor and refuses to get categorized, it questions hierarchies within materials and techniques. Detritus cast aside and rescued from alleyways can be found alongside expensive silk and high-quality artistic tools. He is particularly drawn to industrially produced materials as they offer an opportunity for the reintroduction of the human hand in their creation – for reanimation. Subtlety, vulnerability, playfulness, and insistent presence has become hallmarks of his practice. Løland completed his MA from Bergen Academy of Art and Design in 2009. Recent solo exhibitions include Reservoar (2022) at The Textile Industry Museum, Salhus (NO), Før, før, etter, etter (2021) at Tag Team, Bergen (NO), Albogerom (2020) at SOFT Gallery, Oslo (NO) and Folded Lines, Battle and Events (2016) at Entrée, Bergen (NO). Current group exhibitions include The Queer Gaze at KODE Art Museums, Bergen (NO) and Contextile at the 6th Contemporary Textile Art Biennial in Guimarães (PT). Løland’s work is included in the collections of KORO Public Art Norway, KODE Art Museums and Composer Homes, The Bergen Municipality Collection, Sogn og Fjordane Art Museum, University of Bergen as well as several private collections.

The book includes a new essay by Heather Jones, and newly translated texts by Sara Kollstrøm Heilevang and Nanna Stjernholm Jepsen. The publication is designed by Petri Henriksson (Blank Blank), and published by Entrée.
